Kiwikids News - Literacy -

For this task I had to, read one of the articles from kiwi kids news and reflect back with what was happening in the article. I read '14 Auckland Beaches Declared Unsafe' As you can see by the title it has something to do with Auckland and the 14 beaches in it.

Gilbert Baker - Protest Writing -

Do you know Gilbert Baker? Have you heard of Gilbert Baker? Gilbert Baker is a well known protester as he started the protest for LGBTQ which stands for, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. In his time he created “The Rainbow Flag” In 1978. 

Gilbert Baker was born on June 2 , 1951 in Chanute Kansas, United States. He sadly passed on March 31, 2017 in New York. Gilbert's ‘father was a judge and his mother was a teacher. He also served in the United States army for about two years from 1970 to 1972. He was also set as a medic in San Francisco at the beginning of the gay rights movement, and lived there as an openly gay man.

In the late 1960’s young gay men and lesbian women were arriving from all of the country in San Francisco and all over the world. Many of them fled the places where they were experiencing unbelievable violence, threats and repression. One of them was Gilbert Baker, Gilbert met someone named Cleve Jones and they were both young activists they both planned the 1977 San Francisco Gay Pride Event. Back then they called it “Gay Freedom Day” Where you get to be free and express who you are. 

 

They were all a part of the circle of activists who were talking about needing a new symbol to express themselves and connect us all equally. And that's when Gilbert Baker came up with the idea of a rainbow flag. He showed his drawings and ideas to Cleve Jones and saw the power straight away, each colour has its own meaning and a special significance. With a team of volunteers including Cleve and Gilbert they sewed and dyed the flags in preparation for “Gay Freedom Day” Which must’ve taken a long time meaning that this meant a lot to them! During Gilbert Bakers time he designed and worked on his flag that he created as a Symbol that was for the LGBTQ community.  Gilbert saw the rainbow as a natural flag from the sky, so he adopted eight colours for the stripes, each colour with its own meaning (hot pink for gender, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit.

Gilbert Baker protests were successful in his time and still is till this day. There are Rainbow flags hung up all over the world still representing the LGBTQ but not only that but representing Gilbert Baker and his achievements in his years! :))

Water Worries - Literacy

Task Description: For this task I had to write 2 paragraphs about, what pollution is, and how we can prevent water pollution. Then I had to infer of some sentences and answer the questions

Why do need school?

Why do we need school? Introduction: Do you go to school? School is where you learn many things and make many friends. Every school has one principal and teachers. We need to go to school to, learn, get a job, and to socialize. Body paragraph 1: At school learning is your top priority, there are many subjects to learn. Some of those subjects can be, reading, writing, maths or art. Yet what you learn is all up to your teachers. All these subjects can be useful for your future. Body paragraph 2: School also helps set a path for your future. After you leave school you must find a job to survive in the real world. Reading and maths is something every job has so that is another reason why we need school. Body paragraph 3: Socializing is something everybody needs. Say your not confident as much and don’t really socialise with anyone, school is one place to gain your confidence and meet new people. Socializing isn’t always easy but can be done in a instant. For example imagine going to a shop and purchasing something you will need to interact ith the shop keeper in order to buy your specific item. Conclusion: Now you know why we need school. You can gain your confidence and learn to socialize. School can also help you get a job and you learn different subjects at the same time. But don’t worry of course you have friends aswell. Without school the world itself wouldn't be balanced.

Eleven by Sandra Cisneros - Reading

For this reading task I had write what the story was about and then I had to highlight the subjects, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions and nouns, I also had to highlight the independent and dependent sentences. I also had to describe the sentences written down. Next I had to describe what was happening in the 2 photos provided and describe the clues. Finally I had to about what is belonging, I had to use T.E.E.L to write which stands for Topic sentence, Explanation, Example, and Link.

For this task I had to write what the story is about, then I had a grammar check and had to highlight the subjects, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions and nouns. Then I has to describe whats happening in the photos, and I had to describe the clues in the photos. Lastly I had to write a sentence for the topic sentence, example, explanation, and link.

The Battle Of The Shark And The Octopus - Literacy Summary

There was a Fijian God named Takuaka, he is a high god of Fiji and the guardian of the reef. As Takuaka is a god he could transform into a shark, so that he can travel from island to island, just to defeat other guardians from the reefs. Takuaka meet his old friend who is also a god Masilata. Masilata told Takuaka that there is another strong guardian that guards Kamatuvú Islands. Takuaka went looking for this guardian and soon they were battling. But this time it was different it was a octopus with 8 tentacles. Takuaka was struggling and knew he was gonna be defeated, he begged the guardian to let him go and Takuaka promised he won't hurt anymore people. So he did, the guardian let him go and left Takuaka keeping his promise.

Time Warp By Seb Darr - Reading

For this task I had to read the story Time Warp by Seb Darr, this was a fiction story so it was made up. I had to summarise what the story was about then, say why I think Jack changed his mind about history. Then I had to highlight the subjects and verbs, and find which sentences were independent and dependent, I also had to find how many clauses were in the sentences and what type of sentence they are.

Today we found out that kiwi Sailor Sam Bacon is donating. Clothes to our school, to help us prepare for camp. We are really grateful and would like to thank Mr Bacon.

Leaning Tower Of Spaghetti

This morning it was our first time back in our normal literacy classes. Today for literacy we did a little challenge. We had to build a tower out of spaghetti, we had other things to help us keep the tower stable, like tape and string. We taped the string to the table, then we taped the spaghetti to the string. Then we started attaching the spaghetti on top of eat other and taped it. Once we were done we had to add a marshmallow on top and see if it would hold.
