Winter Hoilday Blogging.

Where New  Zealand Is Located
New Zealand is located in the South Pacific Ocean (1500) km south east of Australia). There are two islands in New Zealand the North Island (te Ika-a-Maui) and the south island (Te Waipounamu). The (te Ika-a-Maui) is the 14th largest island in the world. According to Moari back in the days the North and south Islands of New Zealand arose as the great fish demigod Maui and his brothers were fishing from their canoe (the South Island) when Maui caught a great fish and pulled it from the sea. While he was not looking his brothers fought over the fish and chopped it up. This great big fish became the North Island and South. Thats how the North and South island became (te Ika-a-Maui) and  (Te Waipounamu). The Moari name for New Zealand is  Aotearoa.

  1. Welcome to the Winter Learning Journey, Madison! It is so great to have you blogging with us!!

I really enjoyed reading your story about the origins of New Zealand. I think that the story about Maui is quite fascinating. My son, Aronui, loves to read Maori mythology and stories and the tale of Maui and his brothers is one of Aronui's favourites. He also really loves the tale of Tane and his quest to gather knowledge. Aronui is actually named after one of the three baskets of knowledge that Tane gathered. They were: te kete-tuatea (basket of light), te kete-tuauri (basket of darkness) and te kete-aronui (basket of pursuit). According to the myth, kete Aronui holds all of the information that people need to learn about peace, aroha, and the humanities (https://maoridictionary.co.nz/word/2581).

I hope that you will continue to blog with us this holiday and share all of your learning. I can't wait to see what you post next!

    All the best,

    Rachel :)
