Week 1 Day 1 - SLJ 2019

Activity 1: Setting Sail [ 4 points ]
For this activity, make a list of ten food items that you could take with you. Please think carefully about what you will take as you won’t have access to a refrigerator or freezer while at sea. Please explain why you would select each item.

On your blog, post your list of 10 food items you would take on an ocean voyage and the reasons why you chose these items.
10 Food Items:
10. Water / Water is my number 1 priority, water keeps you hydrated, fun fact you can survive by just drinking water but if you go without water for even a week you could get sick.
9. Beef Jerky / many people eat jerky as just a snack or something to chew on, but did you know jerky is actually a good survival food. Jerky is good storing for the future.
8. Barley Sugar / Barley Sugar is a traditional lollie that comes in a variety of
}flavors. Barley sugars are like a snack / sweet treat, barley sugars are like a lollipop without a stick at the end.
7.  Peanut Butter / Peanut butter is a good and nutritious way to stay fed in a emergency or disaster. It has plenty of nutrients and proteins to carry you over short periods, or it can supplement a long-term food storage supply.
6/5. Canned Vegetables / Canned vegetables aren't the best thing to eat but we still need to stay healthy especially on a trip, but that depends how long you will be gone for. I would most probably take to different types of vegetables, peas and sweet corn. Since I picked two different types of vegetables that leaves me with 4 more options
4. Tortillas / Tortillas is a good option because you don't need to put it in a fridge or freezer, and another thing is tortillas have no crumbs. Another fun fact astronauts use tortillas in space as-well instead of normal bread.
3. Honey / Honey is another sweet option that again doesn't need to be put inside a fridge or freezer. Honey is a great sweet option that you can eat by its self or make a sandwich with.
2. Bananas / I choose bananas because we not only need to eat bread, sweets, and vegetables, but need to eat fruits to not only keep healthy but to keep a balanced diet.
1. Sky Flakes / If you don't know what sky flakes are well they are crackers that are inside a box. Sky flakes are one of my most favorite snacks to eat when I was younger and still is.

Those are the 10 foods I would take with me on a ocean voyage, water, beef jerky, barley sugar, peanut butter, canned vegetables, tortillas, honey, bananas, and last but not least sky flakes.

Activity 2: Discovering Aotearoa [4 points]
For this activity we would like you to think about your own experiences and your own cultural background. Where does your family come from? Do they come from Europe like Abel Tasman, Polynesia like Kupe, or somewhere else?
On your blog, please tell us about your cultural background. Where do you and your family come from?

Both my parents were born and raised in the heart of New Zealand, but they were both born and raised in different parts of New Zealand.

My Mother comes from the one and only Cook Island and England. The Cook Islands is located in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of the New Zealand, she is from the village Aitutaki. England is located in the United Kingdom, my mother has lived in New Zealand her whole life, but she has traveled to different places around the world in Europe and Australia.

My Father is Maori and unlike my mum his family has lived in New Zealand for years. He lived Up North with his family for awhile until he moved to Auckland. Yes my dad does travel as-well but not as much as my mum.

I'm not a hundred percent sure how my parents met but I do know that they have known each other since they were just kids up until this moment, the only language they speak is English. I hope that was enough detail about parents.

Activity 3: Scaling New Heights [6 points]
For this activity, please select a charity that you are interested in. You may choose your own or use one from our list (below). Read about the charity.
On your blog, write a short explanation of what the charity does.
The charity that I choose was SPCA. SPCA is charity that helps take care a variety of animals. SPCA helps protect animals all over New Zealand every year that are either sick, injured, abused, abandoned or simply not taken care of properly. SPCA have a big job, by taking care of all these animals at once. SPCA gives help to animals that desperately need it, and help bring justice o those who have failed these innocent animals. How do SPCA help these animals you say, well they prevent cruelty, educate and engage, rescue, rehabilitate, shelter, re-home, reunite, and seek justice. SPCA know almost everything about these little animals, so if you ever find a animal that is injured you know who to call. Why should you donate to SPCA? If you donate to SPCA you could be saving a animals life, the money that you donate go's towards medicine for the animals and much more. here is a little message from the SPCA. What to do if you find an animal? If you find a sick or injured animal please contact your local SPCA Centre immediately so that we can advise you of the best steps to take.

  1. Kia ora Madison,

So great to see you smashing through this years' SLJ programme, "Changemakers: People who have changed the world" - thanks for completing 3 activities in one blog post, that's really using your initiative!
I'm going to comment on Activity 1: Setting Sail.

You have such a smart list of items to take with you on your 3 week voyage. I'm especially impressed that you picked beef jerky - no fridge necessary! I can't believe that you looked up what foods astronauts take in to space, that's smart! Where did you find that information?

You mention barley sugars as well, have you done the 40 hour famine by any chance? I used to do it when I was in primary school - I used to struggle with not eating especially when people would come home with items like McDonalds. I ended up eating the whole packet of barley sugars.

Looking forward to reading your response!

    Cheers,
    Jordan

    1. Hi Jordan,

Thanks for the comment you have written! I made sure my list of items were a good, long lasting, and healthy. Over the years at Pt England School I have learnt so much, like what astronauts eat and what food I would take with me on a long trip.

And yes I have done the 40 Hour Famine, twice actually. Eating for 24 hours or more ins't that hard for me at all. But the hard part for me was having to raise money for the 40 Hour Famine, I was always shy asking people if they would like to donate.

      Kind Regards,
      Madison
