Week 2 Day 1 - SLJ 2019

Activity 1: Playing Favorites [4 points]
For this activity, create a list of your ‘Top 5’ favorite things to do and take a photo of yourself doing each of these things.
On your blog post both your list and your photos of your favorite things.

Activity 2: [6 points]
For this activity, we would like you to calculate Jessa’s age when she won the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award. She was born on 7 April 1985 and she received the award on 9 July 2010. Please provide the answer to this question in years, months and days (eg. 20 years, 6 months and 2 days).

On your blog, please post both your final answer and an explanation of how you solved this maths problem. You could write your explanation, or use screencastify to record yourself explaining how you solved it.

Activity 3: ‘Dear Jacinda’ [6 points]
For this activity, please write a letter that includes the issue you have chosen, why you have chosen it, and what you would like our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to do about it. It is your job to persuade us (and her!) that it’s an important issue.
On your blog, share your letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
                                                Dear Jacinda Ardern,
My name is Madison, I am 12 years of age. I am a year 7 student attending Pt England School soon to be a year 8. I am writing this letter to you about racism, a few months back there was a terrorist attack in Christ Church, which killed about 50 people. But that's not the point, my point is that you or we should stop racism, for everybody. Being light skinned or dark skinned doesn't matter, or what ever your religion is, everybody should be able to live their lives without this misery

It’s a sad fact of life that racism still exists in this country and the chances are that we have all either seen or experienced it at some point in time. Unfortunately racism is not going to go away quickly. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. No-one is born hating another person because of the colour of their skin, or their background, or their religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn hate, they can be taught love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

That is why I am writing this letter. Racism needs to stop, we are all human beings. Although we may be slighty different from each other, but we were all born on the same planet and all breathe the same air.

  1. Hi Madison, this is Mrs Collins again from Manaiakalani and I'll be commenting on blogs over term break. Well done on posting and participating in the SLJ this year. Here's my workings out on the second problem...
    1985 > 2010 = 25yrs
    7th April > end of April = 23 days
    May = 31 days
    June = 30 days
    > 9th July = 9 days
    = 23+31+30+9= 93 days
    April = 30 days, May = 31 days, June = 30 days (92 days)
    2 days left over
    = 25 yrs, 3 months and 2 days.
    Keep blogging, and commenting on others, to increase your chance of winning one of the awesome prizes and to keep up your learning over the school break!
